Opera Browser Packs Powerful Accessibility Features

by Janet Hopkins.      July 7, 2002

Most people who access the Internet use either Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator as their preferred Web browser. An alternative browser that some Internet users may not be familiar with is Opera. The Opera Web browser (with advertising links) may be downloaded free of charge from www.opera.com Ad-free versions of Opera may also be purchased through the same Web site.

Opera, developed by Oslo-based Opera Software ASA, has been getting a lot of media attention as it has gained a reputation for being faster, smaller and more standards-compliant than other browsers. I recently downloaded Version 6.03 for Windows, although Version 6.04 was just released on July 1, 2002. (The press release can be viewed at www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2002/07/20020701.html) I certainly noticed an increase in speed, and I quickly became comfortable using some of the productivity techniques available through Opera. For example, I´ve found that the use of Opera´s simple back and forward mouse gestures save me time moving through Web pages as I no longer have to move the cursor to the buttons at the top of the screen while looking at that area to make sure I click on the right spot. This browser is loaded with keyboarding shortcuts for new users to try out and a convenient reference window to support the learning process. The Opera browser also has cross-platform appeal as it is designed to support Windows, Mac, Linux / Solaris and other alternative operating systems. The attraction is also international as Opera demonstrates a multicultural development philosophy through its expansion of browser support for minority languages.

The Opera Vision Statement, "Our vision is to deliver the best Internet experience on any device on all major platforms," is supported by the company´s commitment to a set of values, which include Internet accessibility. "We believe in a Net with unlimited accessibility. The Net can be a fantastic experience and opportunity for netizens with physical disabilities. Opera Software will strive to make the Net accessible to all." Various companies and educational institutions, including organizations that represent people who are physically challenged, can apply for free registered Opera software donations through the Opera Global Donations Program at www.opera.com/press/dart.html

Opera makes it very easy for new users to learn about this browser´s accessibility features. The Opera browser provides built-in accessibility options for people with visual and mobility challenges. Opera´s great selection of keyboarding shortcuts, sound cues, text / background colour options and screen zooming capabilities are some of the helpful tools that can make the Internet more accessible and enjoyable to a wider range of users. Opera also has an amazing HotClick definition, research and translation feature for words or paragraphs. An overview of these enabling features can be viewed at www.opera.com/opera5/special.html An animated summary of Opera´s "Top 5 Power Tools" can also be viewed at www.opera.com/press/guides/operapower/
